Raiders bring back safety Matt Giordano. Giordano played in 15 games for Oakland in 2011 and led the team with five interceptions.
49ers Re-sign Ginn
Free agent receiver Ted Ginn Jr. shopped his services to Detroit and Baltimore, but came back to the 49ers in the end, re-signing to a 1-year contract. Ginn was third in the league with a 27.6 kickoff return average last season and fourth in punt returns at 12.3 yards-per-return. With Ginn back in the fold, the team's only pressing need remains a starting right guard. Ironically, Ginn may be most remembered by 49ers fans for a game in which he didn't play, as he was too injured to participate in last season's NFC Championship Game. His replacement Kyle Williams had a couple of disastrous fumbles which cost the team the game.
49ers Reportedly Out of Manning Sweepstakes
Peyton Manning has chosen to sign with Denver, according to a report by ESPN. Alex Smith, who's also a free agent, spent five hours visiting with the Dolphins on Sunday. The 49ers, who've reportedly had a 3-year, $24 million offer on the table for Smith for some time now, will have to see if they can smooth over that relationship (and perhaps throw in some more guaranteed money), or go forward with second-year man Colin Kaepernick and perhaps another free agent pickup, such as former Buccaneers backup Josh Johnson, who played for Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. Tim Tebow will also be available in trade...
49ers Reportedly Sign Manning...ham
A week after landing Randy Moss, the 49ers have reportedly signed former New York Giants wideout Mario Manningham to 2-year deal, according to ProFootballTalk.com. Manningham, 25, is a 6-0, 185 target who had his best season in 2010 with 60 receptions for 944 yards and nine touchdowns. Last year injuries and the emergence of Victor Cruz relegated him to a third receiver role, and he caught 39 passes for 523 yards and four scores. Manningham did have the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter during the NFC Championship Game against the against the 49ers and had several big receptions in the fourth quarter during the Super Bowl win against New England, including a 38-yard reception where he tight-roped the sideline. The 49ers have markedly upgraded their receiving corps in the last week, which may entice a certain prominent free agent quarterback still on the market. Manningham may be going from one Manning to another.
49ers sign RB Cartwright
The 49ers announced the signing of RB Rock Cartwright to a
1-year contract at undisclosed terms. Cartwright, 31, a 5-8, 215-pound 10-year
veteran who’s spent the first eight years of his career with Washington and the
last two with Oakland, is primarily a special teams ace (he had 12 tackles for
the Raiders last season), who can contribute in a pinch as a fullback or
short-yardage back as well. He will replace the departed Blake Costanzo, who
was a terrific leader on special teams, but limited in that he couldn’t
contribute on offense or defense.
BILLS: After days of courting DE Mario Williams, the Bills sealed the deal on the biggest free-agent acquisition in franchise history Thursday by signing Williams to a six-year contract. The deal is reportedly worth up to $100 million and makes Williams the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
GIANTS: BACKUP QB RETURNS
Giants, David Carr agree to one-year deal. Carr opted for returning to Big Blue over joining Bucs.
GIANTS INK TE
Champs sign former Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett to a one-year, $2.5 million deal.
49ers Lose G/C Snyder
Guard/Center Adam Snyder has signed a five-year contract
with the Arizona Cardinals. He saw action in all 16 games plus the postseason
for the 49ers and started the final 13 games of the year after taking over for
the benched Chilo Rachal. The 49ers will need a new starting right guard, as
well as a backup for center Jonathan Goodwin.
BILLS: The Bills were extremely aggressive at the start of free agency, bringing in DE Mario Williams and WR Robert Meachem for visits. The team had dinner with the duo at a downtown restaurant Tuesday night and were actively pursuing the two. According to a report from WGR 550 AM, the Bills expect to sign both players within the next 24 hours.
49ers Reportedly Re-Sign CB Rogers
According to reports from both Yahoo! Sports and the NFL
Network, the 49ers are close to re-signing corner Carlos Rogers, 31, to a
four-year deal worth a maximum of $31.3 million. Rogers, who signed a 1-year,
$4.25 million deal with the 49ers as a free agent last year had a career season
with six interceptions and made his first Pro Bowl team. His signing would give
the 49ers a chance to return all 11 of last season’s starters on defense.
GIANTS RETAIN TWO "OTHER" CORNERS
Obiously the big news of the day came when New York agreed to terms with Terrell Thomas, keeping him in Giants blue for at least the next four seasons. But with free agent Aaron Ross likely to land elsewhere, the Giants inked a pair of CBs that were on their roster last season - Michael Coe and Justin Tryon.
